Our Statement of Welcome

South Church is a Christian community in the Congregational tradition.

In the spirit of Christ, we welcome men and women of diverse backgrounds, abilities, beliefs, races and sexual orientation. We value the gifts and respond to the needs of young and old.

Together, we seek God’s presence and grace, the amazing power of the Holy Spirit, and the courage to be vulnerable to God’s calling.

We respond to our beliefs through worship, music and the arts, study, fellowship and service.

Following the example of Jesus Christ, we are committed to stewardship, action, and leadership in our church and the Greater Middletown community, and to the church’s wider mission.

With God’s guidance and our commitment, this vision will become reality.

What is Open and Affirming (ONA)?
Open and Affirming (ONA) is an official designation with the United Church of Christ (UCC) that signals a fundamental commitment to welcoming members of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community into full participation of the life and ministry of the local church.
Why did South Church become ONA?
South Church has long been welcoming to the LGBT community. Over time, we realized that we knew who we were, but that we didn’t have a public way of sharing that with our community.  Becoming Open and Affirming is a way to formalize what we have long known to be true: Everyone, everyone, everyone is welcome here.
