Welcome to South Congregational Church of Middletown!
We are delighted that you have visited our website and we hope that you will come visit us in person at 9 Pleasant Street in Middletown, across from the South Green. We worship at 10:00AM from September to June. During the summer months we worship with our friends at First Church in Middletown and Portland First Congregational Church at 9:30.
At South Church, we worship our Still-Speaking God with music, words, silence, and prayer. We come before God, just as we are, present to each other, to the community, and to the sacred around and within us.
The Psalmist’s words that we love to sing are a great invitation to be present to the moment: “This is the day that our God has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!” Psalm 118:24. This day bears the imprint of our God. Whether it’s the day when you woke up late and rushed out of the house without enough coffee, the day when you go to receive those medical test results, or the glorious first day of vacation. God’s imprint is on each and every one of our days: an invitation to savor, to discover, to seek God’s presence here and now. Each moment is precious, each moment is an opportunity to be present to each other and to God.
I hope that you have many opportunities to find God and be present to the day that God has made. I hope that you find new opportunities to spend time in prayer and feel connected to God and to community. I hope we all find opportunities to lift up the presence of Jesus in our midst.
And, of course, we hope to see you at South Church!
Rev. Thea Racelis
Where do I park?
Street parking is free and abundant on Sunday mornings! We also have parking behind the blue house at 21 Pleasant Street. We also have parking spaces in front of the church for persons with disabilities. Our church is wheelchair accessible for those entering through the social room door to the left of the sanctuary.
Is your church accessible to all (A2A)?
- We are wheelchair accessible and stair-free by entering through the social room door to the left of the sanctuary.
- We offer large-print bulletins on Sundays.
- We also have assisted hearing devices for those who request them.
- We are striving to become more accessible and to continuing to widen our welcome.
What do I wear?
Come as you are! No, really. We invite you to come join us as fancy or as casual as you feel moved to be today. It’s all good: all outfits are welcome!
What about kids?
Our children worship with us in the sanctuary! We take pride in our intergenerational worship. There’s always something for the kids and there are spaces in the sanctuary where they can practice walking, draw, or practice their dance moves. All ages are welcome!
Do you have Bible Study?
I’m glad you asked! We enjoy gathering together for a Tuesday night Bible study with opportunities to learn more and to discuss what God’s word means for each of us. We meet at 6:30 in the Greene Room/Pastor’s Study from September 20th to December 13th 2016. You don’t have to come to all sessions to join in- come when you are able. All readers are welcome!
Do you welcome the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally community?
Yes. Absolutely! Our church voted to become an Open and Affirming church which means that we welcome, celebrate, and accept all of God’s people, especially God’s rainbow tribe. All colors of the rainbow are welcome!
Do you have communion?
We share Holy Communion on the first Sunday of every month. We believe that the communion table is God’s table and God’s table is open to all of God’s people: whether you belong to this church or to no church at all, whether you are very, very young or very, very old, whether you are a professed Christian, a seeker, or spiritual but not religious, all are welcome to the feast. All who hunger and thirst are welcome!
Do you have a choir?
We have a faithful adult choir that blesses our worship service with their gifts of song and worship. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM, and at 9:00AM on Sunday mornings: all voices are welcome!
